The Intern Diaries: Alex's Journey from Intern to Recruitment Resourcer

Fuse Recruitment

“The opportunities are absolutely there at Fuse, and with the right attitude and mindset, you will be smashing your goals before you know it.”

My name’s Alex, and I’m a Recruitment Resourcer in Fuse’s Brisbane office.

I started at Fuse as an intern in February, during my final semester of university. After succeeding in my internship, I was offered a part-time role as a Recruitment Resourcer in April. I recently finished my degree, and I’m now working full-time within the FMCG sector of the Brisbane manufacturing team. Whilst I was an intern, I was studying a Bachelor of Business (Majoring in Human Resources and Management), working two days a week in the office and studying three days a week at university.

“The opportunities are absolutely there at Fuse, and with the right attitude and mindset, you will be smashing your goals before you know it.”

I applied to the internship at Fuse as the opportunity looked promising, and the company’s reviews were positive. My first introduction to Fuse was the phone call I received from Chelsey (now my supervisor). She was very friendly and made me feel extremely comfortable from the start. Shortly after the phone call, I interviewed with her in person, and we instantly related to each other’s situations as she was also completing a similar degree. It was after this interview that I knew I wanted to intern at Fuse.

In the first few days, I was initially confronted by how alive the office felt, with everyone being incredibly friendly and introducing themselves on my arrival. This was confronting as I had not worked in such an energetic and positive environment before, with everyone being so open and free to have a chat.

“With the help of the team, I was able to build my confidence and work on the structure of my conversations”

On my first day, Chelsey was unfortunately away, which meant I was in the hands of another Recruitment Consultant, Ash. Immediately, he introduced himself and was extremely welcoming, answering all my questions, checking in with me regularly, and making me feel as comfortable as he could. On my first day, I had to take my first call that came into the office number. Ash gave me all of the confidence to do this, told me what to say and how to approach it, and in his words, I “smashed it”.

The most enjoyable part of my internship was sitting alongside Ash, who would always be there to help and keep it light-hearted when I felt out of my comfort zone. As well as this, I was given the opportunity to find out about the journey each member of the team had taken to get to this point in their recruitment career. This benefited my personal development, as it allowed me to gain further perspective on the possible career paths open to me at Fuse and what my colleagues had learnt along the way.

During my internship, I helped the team by working on candidate profiles, conducting reference checks, doing pre-screens, and searching for potential candidates. The biggest personal challenge I had with these tasks was that I was not extroverted by nature, which made calling people out of the blue challenging. However, with the help of the team, I was able to build my confidence and work on the structure of my conversations.

The culture at Fuse is the best I have ever experienced. Everyone I have met has been extremely supportive and approachable about everything. I learned a lot throughout my internship, as I was able to watch and learn from experienced and talented recruiters in the team. This has and is continuing to help me to this day, as I still apply the skills I picked up during my internship in my current role.

My current role as a Recruitment Resourcer involves pre-screening, interviewing, and placing candidates into roles, staying in regular contact with candidates, building relationships, and being there for my candidates whilst they are working with our clients.

My advice to future interns would be to come in with an open mind and give it your all. The opportunities are absolutely there at Fuse, and with the right attitude and mindset, you will be smashing your goals before you know it. With the team supporting you every step of the way and an incredible atmosphere, you will definitely expand your skills, learning valuable lessons that will help you in your recruitment journey in the long run.
