Applications for our 2020 Seasonal Clerk Program are now open!

Applications for our 2020 Seasonal Clerk Program are now open for our Melbourne office. Joining us in either Summer or Winter 2020, this 4-week program is the ideal opportunity for you to experience firsthand what it is like to work as a lawyer in our firm.

Not only will you gain insight into a career in law, but you will also meet our people, sample our culture and determine if K&L Gates is the right career choice for you.

As a Clerk

You will have the opportunity to be placed in 1 of the following practice groups:

  • Corporate
  • Energy, Infrastructure and Resources
  • Finance
  • Intellectual Property
  • Labour, Employment and Workplace Safety
  • Litigation and Dispute Resolution
  • Real Estate

During your clerkship, you will work closely with a supervising partner or special counsel/senior associate who is responsible for your daily work. A graduate or junior lawyer will also be there to provide support throughout your time at the firm. In addition to the daily on the job feedback and guidance you receive, you will also be involved in a structured review at the conclusion of your clerkship.

Professional development is provided throughout your clerkship. It begins on your first day with a comprehensive induction program and continues throughout enabling you to learn important skills that lay the foundation for your legal career.

You will have the opportunity to be involved in many social activities. K&L Gates' clerks are encouraged to attend learning and development sessions, firm celebrations and other activities such as staff drinks and our regular pro-bono, community and charitable activities.

Not only will you get to experience what is like to work in a global commercial law firm first hand, but you will also have the chance to enjoy our down to earth culture we are known for. There will also be opportunities to join in on some of the work we do to create an inclusive, diverse and supportive working environment through events such as those held by Inspire (LQBTIQ+ support network), Diversity Committee and Women in the Profession Committee.

What do you look for in a clerk?

We look to recruit well-rounded, talented people, to provide the opportunities and support for them to achieve their best. It sounds simple, and to us it is.

Our aim is to develop commercially oriented and entrepreneurial lawyers.  Solid academic results are important but to be a future lawyer in our firm you need to demonstrate talent and skill in a variety of areas.  We are looking for diverse, friendly and resilient individuals who care about their colleagues and achieving results as a team. You will have an innate enthusiasm for delivering exceptional service and most importantly, have a strong work ethic.
