As many mining related positions are in Western Australia, it is not surprising that the WA Department of Mines and Petroleum offers a graduate program with a generous starting salary of $68k. Applications close in August each year for a January start.

Depending upon the area of interest graduates should also consider The Geoscience Australia Graduate Program, an initiative of the Australian government. This opportunity is open to those who hold an Honours degree in an Earth-Science related field. Applications open in March/April each year. Make sure you register on their website for an alert to help you meet the closing date.


Competition for graduate roles is medium with most roles in Western Australia.


Western Australia is a popular location for mining, energy, oil and gas graduates. Jobs will exist in other locations as well, usually where mines are located in Queensland and South Australia as well as in the commercial centres of Sydney and Melbourne.
