I work at BHP’s Olympic Dam mine near Roxby Downs, South Australia. We’re a 90 minute flight or 6 hour drive north of Adelaide and while we may be considered to be a bit out of the way we are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country.

I have been working at the Olympic Dam mine for the past year and I have to say, it has been an amazing experience so far! Olympic Dam is located in South Australia and I live in a town about 20km away from the site. Our site is quite unique because we go through the entire process from mining the ore to selling the final products all at the same site – how cool is that!? We produce copper, uranium and even silver and gold!

Graduate Civil Engineer at BHP

To get to site, I catch a 2 hour flight from Perth to Port Hedland on Monday mornings and return Thursday evenings. I’m currently doing a 5/2/4/3 roster (5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off). The company is really embracing flexible work which allows me to work every second Friday from the Perth office. The work is diverse, ranging from reviewing standards to designs and calculations.  There is a good balance between office and site time; on this particular day, I’m spending some time with the rail track team in Redmont (~2.5 hour car ride from Port Hedland).
