What's your job about?
I am a graduate working at Cenitex, which is a company providing effective ICT solutions and services for Victorian public entities. I became a part of Cenitex's Graduate Program in February 2022. The program allows me to rotate to various teams, work with different people, and perform different roles. My responsibilities include assisting with business analysis work preparing reports and investigating ongoing and repetitive incidents. In addition, I am also helping undertake tasks and resolve issues within the team. I also support the team to ensure the continued operational capability of systems to meet and exceed customer requirements.
I help prepare the monthly service delivery reports for my current team, providing insights into our performance in comparison to targets. Also, I provide support to address incidents and requests raised by internal users and customers. To deal with these tasks, effective communication with customers is paramount as it enables me to deliver satisfactory services and meet our customer’s needs.
Being a Cenitex Graduate has offered me an opportunity to learn meaningful and practical skills that will be useful as I progress in my career. Not only does the program allow me to take on numerous tasks, responsibilities, and projects, but it also allows for self-improvement and learning which is so important.
What's your background?
I completed my Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Monash University majoring in Finance and obtained my master’s degree from the University of Melbourne specializing in Information Systems. I chose to study Information Systems and develop my career in the ICT industry because I recognized the importance of data and technology in operating a business.
During my Commerce Degree, I found that data is crucial for us to analyze patterns and gain considerable insights to assist businesses in making the right decisions. Initially passionate about business and finance, I became increasingly interested in the power of information technology and how it has transformed people’s lives and businesses. That’s when I started to seriously consider a career in the ICT industry.
After seeing the graduate roles advertised for Cenitex I applied online as it seemed like a great opportunity. I had no relevant work experience in the ICT industry before I applied but you don’t need, to be considered for one of these roles. After a few assessments and some interviews, I was lucky enough to finally be offered one of the positions in the program. I have already been with Cenitex for a year and a half, and I am still very much enjoying my time here on the Graduate Rotation Program.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
Yes, they could. The graduate program is flexible, and the company is willing to offer training opportunities to graduates to learn on the job. Cenitex actively promotes having candidates from diverse backgrounds, so someone with a different background to mine could do my job. From my perspective, critical thinking and collaboration are vital attributes to be able to perform my job well and there would be numerous graduates who also possess these very same attributes.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
The coolest thing is that I can explore different areas that I am interested in, gain valuable work experience, and learn from experienced professionals. I also don’t require a certain amount of experience in a specific area to be given an opportunity to work within that team. If certain skills are required, I am offered training to uplift my skills to enable me to perform the required work appropriately.
The other cool thing about my job within the Grad Program is that I have the flexibility to determine the amount of time I dedicate to each team. This allows me to fully leverage the program and gain as much experience as I can in my areas of interest. I am also involved in numerous company-wide activities, as all Graduates are encouraged to participate and made to feel welcome. This is a great way to become more familiar with the business, meet new people, and create new and meaningful relationships.
What are the limitations of your job?
As a graduate of the program, you will need to rotate to various teams approximately every 6 months, although there is flexibility. Therefore, you will need to get familiar with what is currently happening in each new area and get used to the work style in each team, etc. This process will repeat a couple of times until the end of the program. This might make it difficult for you to gain a very deep understanding of any particular area that you rotate through.
Secondly, given the relatively short period of time working within each rotation, it might be difficult for you to be involved in every stage of large-scale projects from beginning to end.
