What's your job about?

My tasks included booking in clients for meetings and preparing for those meetings. I will then go into the meeting to take file notes and implement any of the advice post-meeting. I also write Statements of Advice that are personalised advice documents for our clients.

What's your background?

Once I had completed my first two years of University I wanted to get my foot in the door at a financial services firm to gain real-world experience. In my final year and a half of university study, I worked part-time and was able to complete my University placement at my workplace but in a higher-up role (attending meetings rather than admin work). This placement gave me a great experience in client engagement and helped move me through the business into the role I’m in today.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Anyone can do my role. It is a lot of work with many responsibilities but if someone is willing to work hard they can achieve their goals. Time management, organisation and being able to prioritise the most urgent work are the most important skills of my job.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Being able to help people with their finances. This can be a very stressful topic for a lot of families. I also have a great group of peers that make work enjoyable.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Make the most of placements & make connections
  2. Don’t get too caught up in grades, real-world application is much more important
  3. Spend as much time developing your soft skills as your technical skills. These are as important, if not more important than technical understanding.
