Lilli-Anna Borozan

Driven by Dedication: A Glimpse into the Daily Hustle of a Dynamic Corporate Lawyer Navigating Mergers, Privacy Laws, and Professional Growth

4.50 AM

My alarm goes off and I wake up, put on some warm clothes, and head to the gym.

Lander & Rogers - Lilli-Anna Borozan - Waking up going to the gym

6.30 AM

I come home, have a shower, and start getting ready for the day. I try to pack most things and pick out an outfit the night before to save me time in the morning. This means I can spend more time with my puppy (who would rather still be sleeping!).

7.30 AM

I head to the wharf to catch the ferry into the city. This takes about 25 minutes and is such a nice way to start the morning! When I arrive at Circular Quay I usually walk up to the office or, if it is particularly cold, I jump on the light rail which conveniently stops just outside the office.

8.15 AM

I get into the office, have a look around to see who else is in and say hello, and settle in at my desk. First, I check my calendar to see what I have scheduled for the day and then go through any emails or Teams messages that have come through overnight or that I have flagged from the day before. I see that I have a meeting with my mentor at 9 am, so I get started on a few discrete tasks until then.

9.00 AM

I meet my mentor for our catch-up. At Lander & Rogers we are assigned a mentor at the beginning of our grad program, and this relationship continues beyond the program. My mentor and I like to meet at least once a month to have a chat. We discuss how I have been finding my new rotation and develop strategies and goals for the next month. I find these sessions useful for bouncing ideas off each other and having a general chat about life and careers.

9.30 AM

It's time to get properly stuck into the work day. I am currently rotating through the corporate team, which has four main areas: Mergers and Acquisitions, Equity Capital Markets, Digital Economy, and Banking and Finance. As a grad I get to experience all aspects of the team. The first task I have on my list for the day is to review a foreign company's privacy policy to ensure that it is compliant with Australian privacy laws. This requires me to review the policy and consider if it is compliant, if there are changes that need to be made, or if a new policy should be drafted. It also involves researching and comparing the foreign company's local privacy laws to Australian privacy laws.

10.45 AM

Tea break! I put my pen down on the policy review and message the other grad rotating through the corporate team to see if they are free for a quick catch-up over a cup of tea. We head to the kitchen, make our tea and see that the snack selection has just been replenished. We grab some snacks to get us through to lunchtime and head back to our desks. I keep going on the privacy policy review and start flagging queries so that I can discuss them with the supervising lawyer later in the afternoon.

1.00 PM

Lunch time! I meal prepped earlier in the week, so today is day four of the same lunch… I grab my food from the fridge and head to the lobby to meet the other grads for lunch. Today's turnout is larger than usual as the first-year lawyers and grads are all having lunch together. We have lunch as a grad cohort most days, and it's always the more the merrier.

2.00 PM

I jump on a Teams call with the supervising lawyer to give them a status update and clarify my questions about the privacy policy. I am given an additional task in connection with the policy review, which is to draft a collection notice for the same company. I spend the rest of my afternoon on these tasks to get them out before the end of the day.

5.15 PM

After sending off my first review of the privacy policy and draft collection notice, I check my emails to see that I have some transactional work to do tomorrow, I add this to the to-do list and then it's time to log off and go home! I walk to Circular Quay to get the ferry back home.

6.30 PM

I put away my bag and cook some dinner. Then it is time put on some warm clothes and head out with my sister to take my dog for a walk to the local park and back. Then, you've guessed it, I pack my things ready for the morning and hop into bed, ready to do it all again tomorrow.
