I have had the privilege of working closely with junior and senior lawyers and have really enjoyed the mentorship and support within the firm. I'm lucky to work with some of the smartest lawyers tackling difficult and intricate legal issues

What's your job about?

As a graduate at Lander & Rogers, my role includes an array of responsibilities that have provided me with invaluable experience and growth. Having rotated in both the firm's Real Estate & Projects team and Corporate team, I have had the opportunity to work on various tasks, each accompanied by a high level of responsibility.

In the Real Estate & Projects team, I have been involved in drafting initial versions and subsequent revisions of leases, licences, and providing general advice. One of the most exciting aspects has been participating in property due diligence for large-scale transactions. The firm takes great interest in nurturing its graduates, allowing me to actively engage in client meetings and be involved with negotiations with lawyers and companies on the other side of transactions. This has helped me foster a deeper understanding of the legal processes involved across the lifecycle of a matter.

Similarly, my experience in the Corporate team has been equally enriching. I am entrusted with drafting Sale Agreements and taking care of general corporate governance matters for clients. I have also completed both buy-side and sell-side legal due diligence, this time from a corporate perspective.

Overall, my time as a graduate at Lander & Rogers has been immensely rewarding, pushing me to become a more adept and confident legal professional. The firm's supportive environment and commitment to investing in its graduates' development make every day an opportunity to learn and grow in the legal profession.

What's your background?

I was born and raised in Melbourne and attended high school in East Melbourne. Since high school, I've always tried to embrace every opportunity and fully engage in both my school life and extra-curricular activities, whether it be sports, music or volunteering. This approach carried into my time at Monash University, where I continued to engage in both my studies and extra-curriculars. I was fortunate to study in Japan and the U.S., where I gained invaluable insights and cultural exposure from both countries.

My professional path began in retail, where I learned about the importance of customer service and building rapport. I then worked as a legal assistant and paralegal at several law firms. My decision to become a lawyer was driven by my fascination with understanding the life stages of companies and how legal professionals and firms play a crucial role in helping clients achieve their goals while managing their legal responsibilities.

I was lucky enough to clerk at Lander & Rogers, and during the four-week clerkship I gained an understanding of the firm and the day-to-day work of its lawyers. Fast forward one year and I am now working as a graduate at the firm! As I reflect on my journey to this point, I feel incredibly fortunate for the diverse experiences that have shaped me and the opportunities that have led me to Lander & Rogers. I am driven to make a positive impact as a lawyer, and I look forward to continuing my growth in this dynamic and fulfilling career path.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Anyone can become a lawyer or study law, but I think the most important thing is to build strong organisational skills to manage complex matters efficiently; develop adept literacy skills for effective written and oral communication, and have an open mindset. It's important to be eager to learn and adapt to new challenges. With dedication and the right skill set, anyone can both study law and become a lawyer.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The best part about being a commercial lawyer, especially in the teams that I have rotated in so far, is having the opportunity to work with and sometimes on the other side of people with a range of different experiences and interests. I have had the privilege of working closely with junior and senior lawyers and have really enjoyed the mentorship and support within the firm. I'm lucky to work with some of the smartest lawyers tackling difficult and intricate legal issues.

What are the limitations of your job?

As a lawyer, the reality is that your role involves providing essential legal services to clients, ensuring you assist them to the best of your ability. This dedication may sometimes require putting in long hours and taking on substantial responsibilities. However, it is crucial to recognise that in a large law firm, you are part of a team where you have access to a network of supportive colleagues. This collaborative environment lightens the load and allows for the sharing of knowledge and resources, which can be immensely beneficial in navigating the challenges of legal practice.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Fully engage in everything you do. You never know what you actually enjoy until you trial something, and you will get more out of things if you give them a genuine red-hot go.
  2. Travel or study abroad, if you can. Melbourne, Sydney or wherever you are from may seem like a big place, but there is so much that you can learn by visiting and experiencing another culture.
  3. Stay resilient! People make mistakes, people fail, but it's important to learn and grow from these experiences. They will make you stronger and wiser, but only if you learn from them!
