The goal of this Trainee/Cadet role is to become a Trading Representative (Mobile Buyer) of scrap metal.

You will be hands on at the start (yes, you will need to get your hands dirty), learning the intricacies of the scrap metal industry within our recycling facilities. This will hold you in good stead for a successful career with the world’s largest metal recycler. This is a great opportunity to learn the business from the ground up.

Sims Metal (Sims) is a global leader in metal recycling. Sims plays an intrinsic role in the circular economy by supplying local and overseas steelmaking / smelting companies with furnace ready feed which helps reduce carbon emissions which is a key aspect of the Green Metal journey.

Your new role

Sims Metal’s Trainee/Cadet Program offers the opportunity to learn a profitable sustainable business. You will learn about what we do through a structured program including rotations within different areas of the business. 

As part of the Commercial Team, you will be:

  • Helping to achieve commercial targets and goals to develop your knowledge and understanding of buying/trading metals
  • Assisting with customer enquiries
  • Pricing reports
  • Administration support to the Trading function of the business.

The program will expose you to all aspects of our business with the aim of developing your career to become a Trading Representative (Scrap Metal Buyer). 

Our Cadet program has successfully trained our Trading Representatives, Commercial Leaders, as well senior business leaders such as our Chief Operating Officer.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills, complimented by your flexible attitude and ability to use your own initiative
  • You will be highly motivated, able to adhere to strict deadlines and work in a dynamic team environment
  • Tertiary qualifications are not essential, but any business, commercial or customer service experience is desirable
  • Current driver’s license
