Sims Limited plays an integral role in the circular economy by making resources available for future use.

Our purpose, create a world without waste to preserve our planet, is what drives us to constantly innovate and offer new solutions in the circular economy for consumers, businesses, governments and communities around the world.

We have committed to use 100% renewable electricity by 2025 and our operations will be carbon neutral by 2030. Our efforts to lead sustainable practices have been recognized and celebrated, with a current ranking of 11th on the Corporate Knights 2022 Global 100 List of the most sustainable companies in the world!

Our goal is to grow our core businesses and leverage opportunities to expand into relevant environmental adjacencies. Currently, Sims Limited operates three business divisions across the APAC region:

  • Sims Metal buys and processes end-of-life metal from businesses, other recyclers and the general public, which is then sold as raw materials to steel mills and secondary smelters. With more than 200 processing facilities in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australasia, our facilities are capable of recycling a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • Sims Lifecycle Services (SLS) recognizes the value in end-of-life electronic assets, components and materials by providing solutions to extend the life of IT and electronic devices. SLS supports Fortune 500 companies in navigating ongoing technology shifts by securely and responsibly managing the disposition of IT equipment and recycling of electronic products. SLS works with enterprises and major cloud providers to deliver decommissioning of corporate IT assets and data center equipment.
  • Sims Resource Renewal operates within the waste hierarchy and aims to deliver a leading circular business model that creates values for society. Sims Resource Renewal will design and build several facilities around the world by 2030 to transform more than one million tonnes of the material leftover from the metal recycling process each year into new, useful products for society.

Recruitment Process

Are you wanting to work in heavy industry? Working in recycling can be an exciting hive of activity, but it can also be a dirty, dusty environment.

Do you enjoy working with your hands? Perhaps you have an aptitude for fixing up cars, or you enjoy understanding how machinery could work more efficiently?

Candidates who enjoy working with their hands, spending time outdoors and learning about industry will stand out to us in the recruitment process, as this is the kind of environment where you will thrive.

When we ask our teams what they love about Sims, we consistently hear the same response; the people. We are looking for individuals who enjoy building relationships, and getting to meet and communicate with a broad range of people. Our workforce reflects the communities in which we operate, so if community spirit is important to you, we encourage your application!

We have a culture that supports great ideas. We may have a global footprint, but we operate as a flat structure and value innovation grounded in lived experience. If you’re looking to join a team where your input will be valued and you can contribute to improving the way we work, we look forward to hearing from you.

At Sims, we look for candidates who want to build a career with us. As a global organisation, we can offer exciting career opportunities. It is important to us that we are values-aligned, our values being:

  • Safety. Safety will always be our first priority. We believe that all injury incidents are preventable and we are committed to a goal of zero injuries.
  • Integrity. We conduct all business with integrity and adhere to the highest standard of ethical business conduct.
  • Respect. We will treat each other, our customers, visitors and community members with respect and dignity.
  • Transparency. We ensure a sense of appropriate transparency in everything we do.
  • Excellence. We commit to excellence in everything we do and champion continuous development and sharing of best practices across the country.
  • Social Responsibility. We aim to be the world’s safest and most suitable recycling company.

Does reading this excite you?

We have cadetship opportunities available for students who have completed high school or TAFE, as well as graduate opportunities available for degree-qualified candidates. To apply, please upload your resume and cover letter outlining what excites you about potentially working at Sims Limited.

Typically, a member of our Talent team or the hiring manager will call you to briefly discuss your application, and if it feels like we might be the right fit, we will invite you for an interview. You will have the opportunity to meet with the hiring manager directly and share your experience and interests, and we will give you a tour of the yard to provide insight to what it’s like to work at Sims.

Due to the nature of our industry and being an ASX-listed organisation, we have a comprehensive screening process that includes conducting reference checks with your previous and/or current manager(s), a medical assessment to determine fitness for the role, verifying your right to work in the country where you are applying, and a criminal background check.

Remuneration & Career Growth

When you join Sims in an early career role, you will be set up with a mentor to help you build knowledge of the business and help set you up for success. You will have a tailored development plan, including the opportunity to gain exposure across different areas of the business, helping you achieve your full potential.

We take a promote-from-within approach at Sims Limited, which means you will have access to opportunities to build a rewarding career, contributing to preserving our planet!

Most of our cadet and graduate programs last for 12 – 18 months, however timing is flexible to accommodate study commitments and factor in opportunities that might become available to you before the expected program end.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • The best aspect of working at Sims Metal is the opportunity to be part of a well- established and environmentally responsible company. Sims Metal values sustainability, innovation, and employee development, providing a positive work environment and a sense of contributing to a greener future utilising the most optimised engineering processes available
  • The most enjoyable experience about working for Sims Metal is the positive work environment that surrounds all aspects of the business. I find everyone incredibly supportive of each other and generally happy to be at work.
  • The environment is great, and there are plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. There is a lot of support.
  • You are able to be exposed to so many aspects of engineering in business, from designing and installing machinery to operating and maintaining it.
  • It is particularly satisfying to know that the job I am doing is environmentally friendly, and it gives me a sense of fulfillment to be a part of such an endeavor.
  • Not so much the 'worst' thing, but I would love to see a more diverse range of people working on site. All office and admin rolls appear to be diverse; however, yard roles tend to be dominated by men. I understand this is primarily due to the nature of the work and that it can be hard to diversify when the industry is so male-dominated. I think that there is potential for a few changes to be made to make a more welcoming space for women to want to apply for yard positions. I have noticed that there has been effort toward this, and I greatly appreciate that. I look forward to seeing how Sims adapts and grows further in the future.
  • So many challenges in all aspects, especially planning and organizing.
  • Reporting processes can be challenging during report periods e.g. EOM and EOFY
  • Nothing comes to mind.
  • There isn't anything I can think of.
