No two businesses are the same and furthermore, no two days are the same. I am constantly learning about new businesses and industries and learning both technical and professional skills along the way.

What's your job about?

William Buck is a leading mid-tier Australian accounting firm with 900 employees situated Australia wide and in New Zealand.

As an analyst working in the Corporate Finance division, we assist clients with

  • Financial Modelling
  • Funding and IPOs
  • Mergers, Acquisitions & Divestments
  • Strategic Business Consultancy
  • Transaction Services
  • Valuations

When working on a valuation, my responsibilities include attending client meetings in order to gain insights from management including a general business overview, trends in performance and specifically what factors have led to an increase or decrease in certain account balances.

I am then tasked with collating and analysing financial and other information in excel to arrive at a valuation, which is then drafted into a report that summarises our findings.

No two businesses are the same and furthermore, no two days are the same. I am constantly learning about new businesses and industries and learning both technical and professional skills along the way.

What's your background?

I was born and raised in Sydney and first gained exposure to accounting and finance during school by attending commerce and business studies. This led me to choose to study Commerce at the University of Sydney upon graduation.

Throughout my studies, I gained a passion for accounting and business in general which led me to apply to William Buck in the firms Business Advisory division. Throughout the interview process, I loved the sound of the role and the firm’s culture which led me to accept the offer and I’m very glad I did!

Throughout the first 10 months of my time at the firm, I learnt the fundamentals of accounting and thoroughly enjoyed working in a corporate environment for the first time. I was exposed to a range of different businesses from my first day and received excellent mentoring and training from my managers and directors.

I was then able to transfer to the Corporate Finance division where I currently am and am loving the challenges and skills entailed within the role.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

The jobs I am tasked with rely heavily on the technical knowledge and skills I gained whilst attending university and therefore I believe that in order to be successful in my role it is essential the individual has a relevant degree in Commerce/Business majoring in accounting/finance and thus not everyone could do my role.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The coolest thing about my job is having direct exposure to clients and working closely with my team who are all highly experienced in their profession.

Upon the completion of a project, presenting all your hard work to the client is extremely satisfying as you are able to see how you have helped them solve their complex business problems and goals.

What are the limitations of your job?

A potential limitation of my role is the continuous training and learning that is essential in order to become a qualified Chartered Accountant. This means many long nights and weekends of studying after working long hours which at times can be tiring. However, this is paramount to becoming successful in my role and the knowledge gained far out ways having to study, plus it is only a few years.
