Māori & Pasifika at ANZ

Māori in Aotearoa New Zealand

As the first settlers of Aotearoa New Zealand, Māori are an integral part of the nation's fabric. Tākiri-ā-Rangi - ANZ's Te Ao Māori Strategy acknowledges this, and seeks to enhance our relationships with all tangata whenua, mana whenua, and whānau.

We know our actions can influence the wellbeing of our customers, staff, communities and the environment. Being a responsible corporate citizen is one of the best ways we can show our commitment to long-term success for all, and our relationship with indigenous peoples is key to that social and commercial responsibility.

As part of the Tākiri-ā-Rangi, ANZ is launching Te Reo Māori and cultural competency courses for staff, and is seeking to recruit, retain and advance more Māori. ANZ is also committed to increasing financial literacy and home ownership among Māori customers, while helping establish and grow Māori-owned businesses.

ANZ recognises that the traditional Māori values encourage a longer-term view, and a sense of inter-generational responsibility, which can lead to a better future for whānau, hapū, iwi and the wider community. Te Tiriti o Waitangi is our nation's founding document, and ANZ acknowledges the promise made in 1840.

Tākiri-ā-Rangi has set us on a course to understand and work more closely with all Māori, to grow our nation together, preserve and celebrate our unique taonga, and to shape and protect our world for future generations.

"Kia hanga i te ao e ora ai, e tupa ai, te tangata me te kāinga" - to shape a nation where people and communities thrive.

Māori & Pasifika Staff Group

Several years ago a group of like-minded staff came together to form 'The Māori & Pasifika Staff Group'. Our goal is to ‘Develop strong connections with our people, within a supportive environment, to make a difference to our Māori & Pasifika communities.

Our staff have led the celebration and recognition of Māori & Pasifika cultures within ANZ and our customer communities and our commitment has been recognised by the Māori Language Commission*.

*ANZ was a finalist in the 2015 Māori Language Awards - Ngā Tohu Reo Māori.
