Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders at Department of Industry, Science and Resources

The department is committed to providing a workplace that is culturally safe and inclusive of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The department’s Indigenous Employee Network (IEN) provides peer support, networking and professional development opportunities for all staff who identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. 

The IEN supports the department’s efforts to create a culturally safe and inclusive workplace by:

  • helping the views and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff to be heard
  • addressing these views and aspirations in a positive and solution-focused way
  • providing leadership and direction on the department’s inclusion and diversity targets for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • promoting cultural understanding, and providing advice on inclusive language and traditional and modern protocols
  • supporting the actions of the Stretch Reconciliation action plan (RAP)
  • reporting to the RAP Committee twice a year on concerns and outcomes.

Membership is open to all Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander staff.

In the 2022 APS Census 2.5% of departmental staff identified as being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
