The Jetstar story
Jetstar first commenced operations in Australia as a domestic airline in 2004. Since then the airline has changed the face of flying in Asia Pacific. People who once couldn't fly, now can, and often.

The Jetstar Group is one of Asia Pacific’s fastest growing airlines. It’s made up of Jetstar Airways (a subsidiary of the Qantas Group) in Australia and New Zealand, Jetstar Asia in Singapore, Jetstar Pacific in Vietnam and Jetstar Japan.

In under a decade and a half, Jetstar’s workforce has expanded tenfold. It now has a fleet of over 130 aircraft that offer more than 5,000 flights a week to over 85 places across Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the Pacific.

The culture
Jetstar has a unique culture that stems from their core brand values of being safe and responsible, being efficient, having a consistently can-do attitude, working as one team, being passionate about enjoyment and genuinely caring. As part of the Qantas group, Jetstar takes pride in its “diverse workforce that reflects contemporary, multicultural Australia”. The airline seeks to develop “inclusive leaders who value and have a deep understanding of diversity and inclusion, and the capability to build inclusive teams and working environments”. In December 2014, Jetstar created a Diversity Council, committed to driving better outcomes through diversity and an inclusive and collaborative culture.  There has been focus on building a female talent pipeline, improving flexibility in the workplace, and delivering unconscious bias training to leaders.  The council seeks to improve not only diversity, but ongoing inclusion. With a broad range of work groups, Jetstar offers flexible working arrangements to suit various roles. Flexible working arrangements are available for parents and care-givers, and those with other commitments.

Social contribution
Jetstar is passionate about making a positive contribution in the communities they operate in. Jetstar’s StarKids partnership with World Vision funds humanitarian relief and community-based projects in Australia and throughout Asia. Jetstar’s Flying Start program provides cash and free travel to selected community groups and organisations in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Jetstar was also the first official naming partner for Little Athletics Australia. Jetstar seeks to minimise its impact on the environment by using fuel-efficient aircraft, investing in the latest technology and offering the Fly Carbon Neutral program, which allows passengers to offset their share of the carbon emissions generated by their flight.

The recruitment process
Jetstar’s two-year rotational graduate program offers a diverse, exciting and supportive environment designed to develop your technical capabilities and prepare you for future leadership positions.

The generalist graduate program offers four 6-month rotations across a variety of departments including: safety, engineering, ground operations, networks and planning, sales and marketing, corporate communications, digital, product and ancillary revenue, revenue management, customer care, strategy, IT, and human resources.

Jetstar also offers a finance streamed graduate position, involving at least two rotations in two different finance areas, with the remaining rotations taking place across other parts of the business.

To be eligible to apply you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, have completed a relevant undergraduate or postgraduate degree, be available to commence employment with Jetstar Airways in February and be able to attend key stages of the recruitment process in person, if requested.

Jetstar’s ideal candidate will have:

  • A thirst to learn and a willingness to adapt to an ever-changing environment
  • High levels of resilience, flexibility, intuitiveness and a customer-service orientation
  • Flexibility to work cross-functionally across different business units
  • Proven ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team environment
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills

The recruitment process for Jetstar positions begins with an online application. This includes providing information on education, work experience and preferences and attaching some key documents: a cover letter, a copy of your current resume and a copy of your current academic transcript. The next step is a video or phone interview with our recruitment team. This is followed by an assessment day where it will be your first opportunity to meet some of the team including representatives from the recruitment team, people team, current Jetstar Graduates as well as senior managers and leaders in the business. The assessment centre involves both group and individual activities and you will have the opportunity to understand more about Jetstar’s culture and values. The final stage is a behavioural interview and presentation with two Jetstar representatives at Jetstar Head Offices in Melbourne.

Grads can expect to “be thrown in the deep end from day one, working on dynamic projects where you’ll learn about our operations from end to end”.

Remuneration
A key focus for a low-cost airline is keeping a lid on costs, so while you can’t expect to be earning the big bucks early in your career the salaries are still competitive. A key perk for staff who enjoy travelling (and who doesn’t?) is heavily discounted staff travel fares to destinations all over the world. And not just for yourself but also for your nominated ‘travel companion’. You’ll also be eligible for discounts on accommodation, car hire and travel insurance. There is also an employee-recognition program. Being recognised could result in you receiving gift vouchers, being sent on a holiday or even invited to dine with the executive leadership team.

Career prospects
Jetstar offers “professional development training, career conversations, management and leadership development training, mentoring and on-the-job work assignments. As part of the Qantas group, Jetstar and Qantas employees work closely together with opportunities often arising to work across all Qantas branded airlines, for example: Qantas, QantasLink and Jetstar.

The vibe of the place
Jetstar is renowned for its diverse, dynamic and fun work culture. If you’re looking for a job where you’ll be surrounded by bright and bubbly people, given plenty of opportunities to develop personally and professionally Jetstar could be the workplace for you.
