Kay Hoang

I can work with the latest technologies and keep upskilling myself. I also enjoy those “Yass” moments whenever I find a solution to a problem or when my code is running.

What's your job about?

PEXA stands for Property Exchange Australia. Our company provides a digital settlement and lodgement platform that is used by lawyers, conveyancers, and financial institutions. As a software engineering graduate, I have a chance to explore different teams and technologies.

My current rotation is in the Cloud team and involves working on AWS and cloud-related tasks. I’m working on migrating Bitbucket to GitHub and Bamboo to GitHub actions. GitHub actions help us automate workflows from the build, and test to deployment. I’m normally paired up with a senior colleague in my team who guides me on what to do and provides support.

What's your background?

I came to Melbourne and studied at RMIT in 2016. There are advantages and disadvantages of being an international student. The good things are I learnt a new culture, improved my English and lived independently. There are also some disadvantages such as culture shock and English is not my mother language. It was hard to get a job at the beginning so I volunteered a lot to earn experience and improve my communication skills. Then I had a few jobs before receiving an opportunity to join PEXA as part of their Graduate program.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes. I’m currently learning a lot of skills from working on the job. I think I only use 20% of what I learned in Uni. A good thing about being a grad is that no one expects me to know everything. However, there are still many things that I need to learn.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I can work with the latest technologies and keep upskilling myself. I also enjoy those “Yass” moments whenever I find a solution to a problem or when my code is running.

What are the limitations of your job?

As a graduate, I’m not expected to bear a lot of responsibility. Time is the limitation. As I work in the technology field, there are many interesting things to learn. I always feel like I don’t have enough time.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

I would advise myself to spend more time visiting family and travelling around the world. Travelling overseas now is difficult with Covid. I also don’t have much time as I used to now that I’m working full time.
