Elizabeth Zhong

We have a checklist as graduates to go through all the skills and knowledge we need to have to be proficient in our roles. We usually have a quick chat to see how I’m going and get updated on anything I need to know if I need any additional help with anything.

9:00 AM

I’m not a morning person so being able to work from home sometimes is the best. I like to shift my hours back a little bit if there’s nothing urgent to be done in the morning, so I can get my full 8 hours of sleep. After waking to my alarm, I spend some time scrolling through my socials and checking the news before getting out of bed and letting in the morning sun into my room. I’ve got a couple of plants on my windowsill that I water and then I proceed to make myself a cup of tea.

9:30 AM

Time to hop onto my computer. I enjoy having a laidback morning, going through all the slack messages and emails as well as taking note of what meetings I have for the rest of the day. I try to go through any code that has been put up by my team for review and approving or leaving feedback. Then I start going through the work that I have done the day before if there are small things to fix up before I put it up for review otherwise noting what I need to do for the day or if I have any questions for stand-up later.

10:30 AM

My first meeting of the day, was daily stand-up. We talk about what we’ve done the previous day, what we’re currently working on and if we need any help with anything. It’s good for keeping up to date with what other team members are working on too. After stand-up, I make myself a quick breakfast and eat it at my desk as I go through slack, usually having a peek at what other teams are doing since the channels begin coming to life as people start their day.

11:00 AM

I’m on Ops (operations) duty this sprint so I have another stand-up to attend. Our team used to work on developing a different product but has recently moved to work on something new. We have a team in the UK and India which we still regularly communicate with, working on the other product but we still need one person to attend to anything that comes up during AU hours. In this meeting, I’m filling in on anything I need to attend to, whether it be an urgent bug that needs to be fixed or deploying the latest changes so our customers can use them. Looks like everything is working smoothly and I just have to release the new changes once our QA team gives the approval.

11:15 AM

Ok, time to get into some deep work. I can’t work without some music, so I connect my headphones to my phone and turn on whatever I’m feeling for the day and then let auto-play cycle through my favourites. Then I continue working on whatever I had left unfinished for the previous day or pick up something new from our sprint board. Today I’m continuing my work on creating a Typescript client for one of our APIs.

1:00 PM

It’s lunchtime! Time to shut the screen, make some food and make use of the full hour to relax.

2:00 PM

Back to my computer, I do a quick check over any slack messages or emails I’ve gotten over the lunch break or while I was doing some work. I respond to any messages that need my attention. There’s a meeting coming up, so I make sure I’m prepared with whatever I need to talk about in the meeting.

2:30 PM

I usually have a catch-up with someone around this time. Today is my weekly meeting with my people leader. We have a checklist as graduates to go through all the skills and knowledge we need to have to be proficient in our roles. We usually have a quick chat to see how I’m going and get updated on anything I need to know if I need any additional help with anything. Then I go through some of the items on the checklist that I feel like I’m ready to tick off. My people leader checks my knowledge, fills in any missing knowledge and then that’s another tick on my checklist!

3:00 PM

I got a ping on Slack telling me that the application has been tested and the latest changes have been approved for release. Time to kick off a deployment, crossing my fingers that everything goes through smoothly.

3:30 PM

Looks like everything is good. You know the drill, plug in the music and back to work!

5:30 PM

People are clocking off at around this time, so I make sure to ask any questions before 5.00 PM. After that, I enjoy an hour without distraction to continue working.

6:30 PM

I’m getting hungry so it’s time to wrap up. I put up my code for review if it’s done otherwise, I leave it at a good place to be picked back up tomorrow. I make my dinner, watch some YouTube and play some games until my bedtime at 1.00 am (oops late!).
