Pros & Cons

  • Structured graduate program and frequent graduate events Supportive and friendly team/staff Very good workplace flexibility Lots of benefits Very interesting and unique work Graduate cohort are very kind and inclusive.
  • The work culture is really healthy and welcoming where they encourage self-growth and learning and are willing to accommodate minor work changes with flexible working arrangements.
  • Roles of high responsibility & willingness of employees to pass on experience.
  • Inclusivity of all and non-bias towards who you are, where you come from, what you're doing, where you want to be. Development opportunities are plentiful and all are encouraged to pursue whatever they choose in their future career. Everyone has been and continues to be welcoming and supportive in so many ways.
  • Viva has an amazing culture, it is the people that make this job so rewarding.
  • Diversity of the company means half of my team is on the other side of the country (which isn't a minus or a plus, more of an in between).
  • This is not necessarily the worst thing. A small pain point is working through the ambiguity of transitioning following two acquisitions. However, this is temporary and will better the organisation moving forward.
  • Given the practical nature of the refinery, initially there is limited availability for working from home. Personally I choose to work in the office to maximise learning and relationship building, however, there is definitely flexibility for WFH 1 day per week in the short term process engineer role that many graduates go into early in their career. In other roles there is availability for more days WFH.
  • High pressure work can sometimes be stressful
  • It can sometimes be busy with increases in workload, but the team is always really supportive and are happy to help where they can.

Corporate Social Responsibility
There are always seminars on different social issues - The culture of the company emphasises attendance at these activities as well, which I find just as important as having the activities in the first place.

Culture

Culture
The company has really good respect for work/life balance and encourages you to 'switch off' when you get home. There's a very big support for the transition to full-time work including mentors, buddies, support/info sessions and check-ins. The culture also supports flexible work, you can vary your start/finish time and have some work from home days. There is no expectation to work outside of your working hours. My department is very friendly/fun. Most people are very social and every once in a while, we have a team activity with a focus on getting outside. In the graduate program you have about 10 peers that the company encourages you to socialise with, and even funds/organises some of them.

Diversity

Diversity
The company has made a commitment to promoting all of the above diversity aspects. I have not seen any judgment from any individuals in terms of people expressing themselves. It is great to see such diversity within the management as well. They review all applications fairy and recruit from a diverse range of locations and are willing to assist approved applications to training by providing them support.

Satisfaction
My role is very varied, which is exactly what I was after. Within the department I'm working on multiple projects in different areas of the site. My projects are generally medium-long term projects. There is a good amount of product research and stakeholder engagement in my role to come up with solutions to resolve/improve what is currently in place. As my projects are medium-long term I don't have any specific day to day responsibilities, so I self-manage my tasks for each day and ask for help/report my progress updates to my line manager as I go. Also generally, my day could be any combination of office work, working from home, meetings, training and site walks.

Regularly in contact, more than just the monthly 1 on 1's. Good mentor and incredibly willing to help me learn and grow.

Great location, great facilities and the dress code is varied. Some people dress more formal, and some more casual.

Recruitment
Initially there was an online application, you are then invited to complete a virtual interview. Once progressed, you will participate in an in-person assessment centre and interview. I found the recruitment process to be really enjoyable, the facilitators and interviewers were very supportive and they want you to just be yourself. I really like the amount of care and effort that was put in by Viva right from the beginning of my recruitment experience. The questions were based around the company values. They were patient and helped guide you. Don't freak out too much. In the assessments, they want to see how you would act and your process to figuring it out, not necessarily whether you are 100% correct or not. The interviews are not strict and formal like an interrogation, but felt like more of a casual conversation about me and my experiences.
